During the 1980s, the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) participated in several Stonebridge conferences that served as a needs assessment for the fire service. The conferences were limited to fire service personnel only. Out of these conferences the United States Fire Prevention and Control Administration was born. Today, we know it as the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) and the National Fire Academy (NFA). Since that time, the fire community has reviewed the needs assessments and implemented necessary changes and challenges to move ahead. By working in this closed environment, the fire service did not focus on the needs of the customer and how we can work together within our communities.
